It’s been very quiet at the Boat Club over the winter months with the club having its winter break with only the inevitable boat maintenance being the main activity at the club.

The AGM was held in June with Michael Riky taking over the role of Commodore with Hal Olunger reverting to the position of Rear Commodore, taking over from Jenny Weller-Newton. Jenny has been a long term member of the club for over 14 years having previously served on the committee as well as a term as Commodore. She has also been heavily involved as the clubs representative in the Australian Sailing “She Sails” program promoting women in sailing. We welcome some new members to the committee - Andrew Ford, Kate Norton, Des Crossley and Darren Christie.

The new summer season starts in October with the official opening and sail past happening on Saturday 14th October.

Our 2023-2024 program is now available incorporating our regular events including the water safety days, the discover sailing days including she sails, start sailing 1 and 2 courses as well as some new events. Saturday morning sailing will also be returning, open to both adults and children interested in learning to sail.

Saturday afternoons will see the bar opening so come on down and enjoy a cold beverage and bar snacks while enjoying the great views from our deck and garden surrounds. All members and visitors are most welcome.

Sunset on the Deck

On Saturday afternoon 2nd September, the Loch Sport Boat Club in conjunction with local identity Daniel Ryan held a fundraising event at the Club “Sunset on the Deck”

Proceeds from the event will go towards purchasing air conditioning for our clubrooms, so they can be used to provide year round comfort for all events.

The event was absolutely fantastic with a great turnout and lots of fun was held by all. Neirbos Eats and the Naked Spud supplied food on the night, and Lyn Krejci was the lucky winner of our raffle and walked away with prizes to the value of over $2,500!

A big thank you goes out to all who contributed to and supported this great event.

Regular updates will be posted on our Facebook page and if you want to know what is happening at the Boat Club, don’t forget to check our website for more information about the club: https://www.loch-sport.net/

The start of Summer has seen plenty of action at the Loch Sport Boat Club. The annual Water Safety Day was held on Friday 2nd December with children from Loch Sport and Seaspray Primary Schools attending and learning plenty about water safety along with experiencing sailing. Given the alarming number of drownings so far this summer in Victoria, this is an important event for the local children in raising their awareness of water safety. This day was well supported by the local Community services- SES, Fire Brigade, Ambulance, Parks Victoria, Marine Safety and Gippsland Water Police. Special thanks to the Lions Club who provided lunch for all. Another Water Safety Day is planned in February.

Discover Sailing and She Sails were combined into one event in early Jan, with 15 people coming to find out what sailing is all about. A Start Sailing 1 two day sailing course was held on the first weekend of Jan, with 13 people attending on day 1, and 10 on the 2nd day. Several participants have expressed interest in doing their Start Sailing 2 course. If you’re interested in learning to sail or would like to brush up on your sailing skills, then come along on Saturday mornings to the boat club, where our Sailing Instructor and Vice Commodore, Greg will be more than willing to help you. This is open to children and adults.

On the social front, a small group of children enjoyed the end of year Disco – thanks to Nick Tandy for being DJ, while quite a few people attended to see the musician JD Wynn play. Throughout Summer, the Boat Club is open Thursday - Saturday afternoons from 3.30pm so do drop in for drink, bar snack and a chance to check out the views from the balcony.

Do you know our Vice Commodore Greg McNeil? Greg joined LSBC about a decade ago. He’s been sailing since a youngster (in single figures!) when his dad built a yacht a TS16, which Greg still sails all these years later. Greg’s one significant boating highlight is he’s never won a race, yet that has not dampened his enthusiasm for sailing, and passing on his skills as one of the club’s current qualified Sailing Instructors. He enjoys LSBC because it is a great location and place to sail. If you’re into footy, Greg is a committed Carlton supporter – don’t hold that against him!

Also the passing of Ian Andison past commodore of the club 1981 82 and 1982 83 our condolences to Garry and family who frequently visit Loch Sport. Ian through his job at Stegbar windows organised the windows and entry doors of the clubrooms at building in 2000.

The last two years have been hard on everyone, including the Boat Club. Covid restrictions have resulted in us delaying or altogether cancelling events and functions. During the sporadic lifting of restrictions, we still managed to successfully run many sailing and social events albeit with the burden of maintaining Covid compliance.2022 to 2023 is shaping up to be a bumper year for the club. We have many boating and social events planned and a new committee that’s enthusiastic and ready to go:

Hal Olguner continues as Commodore leading the new team
Greg McNeil as vice Commodore in charge of sailing and sail training
Jennifer Weller Newton as Rear Commodore
	Peter Stockman as Secretary
	Roseanna Alexander as Treasurer
Tracey Dines will be looking after the bar, food and functions.
	George Hanzalek as Publicity Officer
Nick Tandy, Michael Riky and Nicole Stephens make up the balance of the committee.

************* Now is a great time to Join the club or renew your membership! ********************

We are currently finalising our 2022 2023 program which will include:

Sail Training /Introduction to Sailing in club boats by qualified instructors for all ages
Cruising in company. Whether it’s in a power boat or trailer yacht, we enjoy cruising around the vast Gippsland Lakes system. Our destinations include: Paynesville, Metung, Lakes Entrance, and some of the many secluded beaches and wilderness areas.
	· Paddle events for Kayaks and Stand-up Paddle boards
	· Club yacht racing, interclub racing and invitational regattas
	· We are finalising programs for the yacht racing fraternity, power boat enthusiasts and sailors of all ages.
	· We also welcome non sailing people from the Loch Sport Community and Visitors to Loch Sport with catered events and live entertainment.

We are fortunate to have a clubhouse situated right on the shore of Lake Victoria offering uninterrupted views over the Lake from our expansive deck. Great place for enjoying your favourite beverage from our licensed bar after a hard day’s sailing. The sunsets are truly magnificent. During the winter season the club’s Bar will be open Saturdays from 3:30 catering to the local community and to visitors that spend the weekend in Loch Sport but need to travel home on Sunday. The Club Bar is staffed by volunteers offering cool drinks and hot bar snacks next to a cosy wood fire. We are installing a huge screen for all the footy fans. Grand final should be a blast.

Working Bee

Last weekend’s working bee was a great success with a huge member turnout. Many hands do make light work! We manged to trim all the trees and shrubs and tidied the yard. The clubrooms, kitchen and Bar received a declutter and clean, the pool table has been recommissioned and a Big TV is on its way.

A big thanks to all the members that volunteered their time.

It’s important to remember for Melbourne or Latrobe Valley based members, our location is the closest for launching your boat in the Gippsland lakes. 30 minutes closer than Paynesville and 45min closer than Metung. The Club is situated adjacent to the Deep-Water Mooring Jetty. A large car park with a newly refurbished triple boat ramp is adjacent to the club. It has very little congestion even in the summer months, compared to other ramps around the lakes. The car park is free, has no time limit for parking cars with boat trailers being left there overnight or for a few days. There is no overhead obstruction around the boat club, car park or launch ramp allowing easy rigging up and mast raising. The jetty has half a dozen or so spots to tie up and a dump point. The beach in-front of the club is sandy with a steep fall of so can also be used to beach your boat.

Loch Sport Boat Club run by its members for its members.

The new committee is focused on ensuring a high level of member participation this coming season. We are interested in your comments and feedback, which will be raised at each subsequent monthly committee meetings. Tell us what you would like the club to be doing or not doing and we will try wherever practicable to plan to implement these changes. We are aiming at a high level of transparency and are focused on making the Loch Sport Boat club, a club for its members.

We have implemented a new communication strategy that will bring you news about club activities through the following channels:

At the recent AGM the Boat Club presented a Life Member award to Hal Olguner our Commodore in appreciation for all his hard work at the club. From early days Hal and Christine joined in on club activities like cruises to Paynesville and games nights, and often at the club bringing his Dad along

Hal has been a member of the club for 24 years since Feb 1997. Hal gained his RSA in 2012, joined the committee in 2014 became vice Commodore and in 2019 Commodore, he took over the liquor licence nominee and worked many holiday weekends for the club when he could have been working on his holiday house.

Hal did not use his own boat but happy and willing to crew with others and help run events jumping into rescue boats and start boats to start races for others.

Hal has been a dependable individual who could have been working at home instead of working at the club over Christmas and at working bees

Hal responded with thanks it was a surprise, he has loved his time at the club and looks forward to when he can spend more time in Loch Sport
